Squarespace Fluid Engine & Squaremuse | Things to know

In July 2022, Squarespace released Fluid Engine, a new content editor for 7.1 version sites. The update introduces new design options for block placement, resizing, and overlap, opening up new possibilities for building layouts for your site pages. Read on to discover more about Fluid Engine and how it affects your Squaremuse product.

Squarespace Fluid Engine & Squaremuse | Things to know

Can you use Fluid Engine on a Squaremuse template? Will our designs be updated to support the new editor? In today’s article, we cover the main things you need to know about this update and what it means for our users.

How Fluid Engine works

Fluid Engine is available on 7.1 version sites in block sections on any page. The new feature adds more flexibility to the way you can edit content – it is now possible to move text around, overlap it with images, and treat your block like a canvas. Fluid Engine is also supported in footers and portfolio sub-pages. While all new 7.1 websites have the new editing tool enabled automatically, users can still choose to continue with the previous building experience, which Squarespace refers to as the “Classic Editor.”

Note that even if your site supports Fluid Engine, some areas will still use the Classic Editor, including blog posts, product additional information, events descriptions, and block sections added before Fluid Engine’s release. The new feature is not currently available for version 7.0 websites.

Fluid Engine and Squaremuse designs

All Squaremuse Designs for Squarespace 7.1 — Design Kits, Sales Pages, and Custom Elements — are built on the Classic Editor and do not support Fluid Engine. If you purchased a Squaremuse product starting from July 2022 and onwards, you will be able to implement it on your Squarespace 7.1 website, but its sections will use the Classic Editor.

Please note that enabling Fluid Engine on your existing 7.1 website will break your Squaremuse product since it relies on a different platform version.

What’s next for Squaremuse designs

We’re excited to see new tools implemented into Squarespace, and our team is closely monitoring how this feature evolves. Based on our experience and of other designers’ in the industry – we’ve decided to continue relying on the Classic 7.1 Editor until the new editor is a fully-fledged product. Therefore, converting our existing products to Fluid Engine is not on our roadmap. We will continue observing the new feature and keep our users informed of any roadmap changes.
