Here, at Squaremuse, we always enhance our products to help you build an impactful website in the fastest and easiest way possible. Our community plays a big role in that, by constantly sharing feedback on how to create better products for all our users. Today we’re talking about our latest breakthrough tool, which our clients have been really loving so far - the Page & Block Library. We’re also sharing some good news about it - keep reading to learn more.
Page & Block Library by Squaremuse
Building a website should be fun. It should give you space to experiment and put your creativity to use. Ideally, that means having the freedom to try one layout at first, change to another, then revert back to the original, only to start again. Or mixing and matching sections across pages to see what looks best. However, Squarespace functionality can be limiting at times. If you happen to delete a block on a page - it’s gone forever. Or if you want to duplicate a section and reuse it, there is a bit of a hassle involved.
Page & Block Library - now available for all Squaremuse Design Kits
Our team is always up for a challenge, and we love to (at least try to) bend Squarespace limits. Hence, we developed a game-changing tool that lets you bring back any page from the original design kit in case you accidentally delete it, as well as duplicate individual sections and reuse them across pages. It’s called a Page & Block Library. If you implemented one of our latest design kits (Böreal, Tuscany, Martini, and Ava Moss) as well as any of our Partner Designs - you got a chance to see this exciting feature in action.
The great news is, that starting with March 10th, 2022, all the design kits in our shop are upgraded to the Page & Block Library. Check this quick video to see what the tool entails, and keep scrolling for an extensive tutorial on how to work with it. We’re also sharing details on how to access the Page & Block Library, whether you already own a design kit or are about to purchase one.
What this means for our 7.1 users
If you’re familiar with Squarespace 7.1, you know how great the platform is, but you’ve probably also come across its limitations. One of them is the inability to copy and reuse content between pages. If you want to duplicate sections into new pages, you have to recreate the layout block by block. And in order to further stylize them, you had to use native Squarespace 7.1 section IDs "to tell" the custom code where to apply style and functionality. This can be tedious, to say the least.
Starting today, there are no more Section IDs! All design kits code has been updated to include the Page & Block Library, so you can easily duplicate and reuse individual blocks AND whole pages without manually rebuilding and worrying that you need to make adjustments in the code.
How the Page Library Works
When you enable the Library plugin, it activates a new “Change Template” button which appears in the left corner of the dashboard when you are located in the Pages tab. The Page Library lets you access all the demo pages of your Squaremuse design kit, which can be restored at any time, in case you accidentally delete them or simply want to repurpose an existing page. This is huge! It allows you to experiment with layouts knowing that you can go back to the original page if you don’t like the end result.
How the Block Library works
When you enable the Library plugin, it activates a new “Add Section” button between sections. This button opens up a library with all the demo sections from your design kit. Similar to Squarespace’s original block library, you can choose any section and insert it anywhere on the page. When you add a section, it includes the original layout, styling & functionality: all CSS and JS code is active. You just have to add images, text, start and edit the block normally. That’s all!
How to access the Page & Block Library
Existing Users (Legacy Users). If you purchased any of these 7.1 design kits before March 10th, 2022: Florence, Vancouver, Copenhagen, Mono, June, Velvet, Lyra, Kenshō, Olivia, Elise, Chlóe, Thea, Margo, Cosi, Ónyx, Osaka, or Fiji - you are a Legacy User. This means that the code of the template you acquired is based on section IDs, and as such the Page & Block Library was not yet available with your product. Your documentation has been since updated, and now includes an article ‘Legacy Users’, which covers how you can benefit from the Page & Block Library.
New Users. When you buy any design kit for Squarespace 7.1 from March 10th, 2022 onwards, you get the Page & Block Library included in your template. To activate the Library, check your Step 3 - Advanced article. No additional actions are required.
